Tal-Mixta Cave: The Best View on the Island

For the absolute best view on the island, head to Tal-Mixta Cave. Hidden high on the cliffs above Ramla Bay, this natural cave acts as a frame for one of the most stunning vistas in the Mediterranean.

From the cave’s opening, you can look directly down onto the iconic red-gold sands of Ramla Bay and the deep blue sea beyond. It’s a favorite spot for photographers, especially at sunset.

Wied il-Għasri: Gozo’s Hidden Sea Canyon

Wied il-Għasri is a narrow, fjord-like sea canyon that snakes between high limestone cliffs before reaching a tiny, secluded pebble beach. This hidden gem is a haven for those seeking peace and quiet away from the crowds.

The clear, calm waters of the canyon are perfect for snorkeling, while the surrounding cliffs offer spectacular hiking routes with views of the Ta’ Gurdan Lighthouse.

  • Taste of Gozo: The Authentic Ftira & Ġbejna

Taste of Gozo: The Authentic Ftira & Ġbejna

Food in Gozo is a celebration of the island’s agricultural roots. Two items you absolutely must try are the authentic Gozitan Ftira and the Ġbejna.

Unlike the bready ftira of Malta, the Gozitan version is more like a sourdough pizza, traditionally topped with thinly sliced potatoes, capers, olives, anchovies, and fresh tomatoes. Pair it with Ġbejniet—small round cheeses made from sheep’s or goat’s milk—often served fresh, dried, or rolled in crushed black pepper.

  • Walking & Cycling

    Walking & Cycling

Gozo has some really excellent walking country.  There are many walking areas, which present a varying level of challenge.  Some of these routes are suitable for pedal cycles too.  The best months for this kind of activity are April, May, early June, then later on in the year in October and November, weather permitting of course !  Just a few favourite routes are shown here, and you would be best advised to plan your route well beforehand.

    Mgarr Harbour
From the harbour at Mgarr walk a short distance up the hill to Fort Chambrai.  This was built in the 18th century by Bailli Jacques-Francois de Chambrai, and is currently being developed into a resort area.  From here, make your way down rough paths which lead to the tiny bay of Xatt L-Ahmer (The Red Shore).

    Sannat Area
From Sannat, make your way to the Ta’Cenc Hotel, then proceed along the country road leading south east to open countryside and cliffs.  About 2 kms west of Ta’Cenc is the valley of Mgarr ix-Xini and sea inlet bearing the same name.  The return journey is up hill along the valley by the road which leads into Xewkija.

    San Blas Bay
Just north west of Nadur, you will find the bay at San Blas.  This is a small sandy beach, accessible only by a steep path !  It is worth the effort though, and from here you can actually cross the headland and walk down to the larger sand beach at Ramla ta’ Hamra.  The Maltese name means ‘red beach’ and it is a very popular leisure area.

  • Holiday Shopping

    Holiday Shopping

Gozo may be small in size, but it has a wide range of shopping facilities. Most of these can be found in the capital, Victoria, where there are three shopping centers, Arkadia, The Duke and Tigrija Palazz.  Here you can find department stores, supermarkets, opticians, fashion and cosmetic shops, haberdashery, jewellers and cafes.  But don’t miss out, take some time to explore the older parts of Victoria, and you will be well rewarded. For the visitor there is much to browse over whilst looking for that holiday memento…

Craft items – where to buy

in Gozo visit the Crafts Centre in the Citadel, and Ta’ Dbiegi Craft village at San Lawrenz – you will find the best range of goods at these places, but local crafts can be found in other shops and establishments throughout the islands.  Craft items, such as knitwear, lace and basketware have a long history are of great cultural value to the island.  The Arabs introduced cotton into Malta, from around 870, and along with it expertise in weaving and dyeing.  During the period of the Knights, Gozitan cotton linen was very highly sought after in Europe.  Silverware and filigree work is very attractive, and the Maltese gold and silversmiths are highly skilled at their craft.

    Lace making

making lace is fascinating to watch; the pattern is drawn up on parchment paper and holes pricked to show where  the pins should be positioned to allow the linen ‘lace’ threads to be worked.  Priests encouraged lace-making in Gozo during the 19th century and before long lace-making spread to become an island industry.  Examples of lace were sent to the Exhibition of Industries held in London in 1880.  This art is usually passed from mother to daughter, and today you can still see women working their lace whilst sitting outside their houses.
    filigree & silverware

there are many fine examples of antique Maltese silverware in museums, churches and private houses.  The Knights introduced the use of silverware at their hospitals, to help prevent the spread of infection, and there are many rare pieces held in private collections.  The craft is carried on in small workshops throughout the islands, and you will find a huge range of designs available for purchase at jewellery  shops and craft centres – look out the delicate and intricate filigree broaches.

    Glassware & pottery

pottery is one of the most ancient of Maltese crafts, and dates back to the megalithic period.  You can find many household items and souvenirs such as candlesticks and decorative tiles and flowerpots made in the traditional way.  Glassware is entirely mouth blown and hand made, and comes in an array of colours and inventive shapes and sizes.  You can see glassblowers at work at Gozo Glass in Gharb.
    knitwear

the Islands have been renowned for the high quality of their cloth for centuries.  Today, fabrics are produced by hand and mechanised means.  Gozo produces a wide range of knitted garments, rugs and wall hangings.  You can find these for sale all over the island at very reasonable prices.
    basketware

this is an old craft, developed for the needs of the fishing and agriculture industries.  The market in Independence Square, Victoria  usually have a good variety of these items, along with pieces in wickerwork.
    things to eat and drink

there’s a vast selection – try out Gozitan Thyme Honey, peppered goats cheese Gbejniet, nougat and the Maltese snack Pastizzi, filled with cheese or peas…or what about Gozitan Olive Oil or a bottle or two of excellent wine…

  • Gozo Beaches

    Gozo Beaches

Gozo has several beaches and coves, all of which vary in size and atmosphere. Some demand a degree of effort to get to, others do not. You can pick the one to suit!

    Ramla l-Hamra Bay

This is Gozo’s finest and largest sandy beach, with lovely red gold sand. The bay is surrounded by countryside and there are no nearby tourist developments, but there are some snack bar facilities. The beach has its own landmark – a white statue of the Virgin Mary. Swimming is safe in clean seas, and in windier weather there is white surf rolling in onto the sands. Best to reach this bay following the signs from Nadur or Xaghra. It is highly recommended for families and sunset enthusiasts.

    Dahlet Qorrot Bay
Find this isolated bay on the north east coast just below Nadur and Qala. The coastline is craggy, and the bay is still used by local fishermen. Perfect clear waters for snorkelling, and a good place enjoy a quiet stroll in the off season months.

    Dwerja
The Inland sea, and the bay itself was created millions of years ago, it is thought when two caves collapsed. The shallow lagoon found inland is linked to the sea via a 100 metre cave. It is used by fishermen, swimmers and by divers as an access point. The area also has some good underwater caves providing spectacular dive sites.

    Hondoq ir-Rummien
Just below the village of Qala is the small cove of Hondoq ir-Rummien, very popular with bathers, and particularly snorkellers because of its clear and deep waters. Access to the sea is by bathing ladders. From here there are good views over to Comino.

    Marsalforn
This is Gozo’s main seaside town, and in the summer months it is a bustling and lively resort area. There is a small beach near the harbour with safe bathing. A little farther around the coast, towards Qbajjar there is rocky coastline and good snorkelling.

    San Blas Bay
This is a small, rocky bay set in lovely countryside, flanked by terraced hills, just below the village of Nadur. Recently, San Blas bay has been voted one of the top ten most beautiful secret beaches in the world! It is a favourite spot for bathers, note there is only a small parking area, and the beach is down a rather steep hill. But take your time – the scenery here is beautiful and there is no hurry…

    Mgarr ix-xini
This is a small isolated inlet arrived at through a scenic gorge, just below the village of Xewkija. It was used by the Knights as a galley harbour – though today it is a quiet bathing spot with good swimming and snorkelling.

    Xlendi
This is a lovely sea inlet, which is flanked by spectacular steep cliffs. There is a tiny spit of sand near the harbour, but bathing here is usually off the rocks along the bay from ladders. There are pathways here too, just along the left hand side of the bay, with spacious flat rocks for sunbathing. Come here for stunning views out to sea, lovely scenery, and to enjoy the sunsets!

More than 40 species of fish can be seen around the islands, including grouper, moray, octopus, eagle ray, angler fish, with sea anemones to give a little colour…
