Along the north coast of Gozo, just past the popular resort of Marsalforn, lies one of the island’s most photographed spots: the Xwejni Salt Pans. This 350-year-old checkerboard of rock-cut pans stretches about 3km along the coast.

The tradition of sea-salt harvesting has been passed down through generations. During the summer months, you can still see local families scraping up the salt crystals and storing them in the caves carved into the cliff face behind the pans.
